I think that to start with you just need to be persistent in your writing for a couple of months.

And you should comment on what other popular blogs posts. Doing it on your own blog will send the blog post you're commenting a trackback, so that there will come a reference back to your site. This is an easy an active way to generate traffic. But don't over-do it, be respectful to the other bloggers and you might end up getting some good connections.
